Does Autumn Begin With the Falling Leaves?

Autumn – the season between summer and winter comprising in the northern hemisphere usually the months of SeptemberOctober, and November or as a reckoned astronomically extending from September equinox to the December solstice – called also fall.

Autumn Is Here

Pumpkins in the cornfields

Gold among the brown

Leaves of rust and scarlet

Trembling slowly down

Birds that travel southward

Lovely time to play

Nothing is as pleasant

As an autumn day

– John Muir

Is Autumn (fall) your favorite season?

So, many people love this time of year (myself included)

for so many reasons…from the changing colors to the cooler temperatures and

yes…even the shorter days…but does Autumn always begin with the leaves changing

and falling from the trees? In this blog post we will celebrate the beginning of Autumn…by taking a look at the different changes that occur and how they differ from one area to the next. We will also examine  why  some areas see these changes more then others as well as share some craft and recipe ideas.

In many regions of North America, the landscape shows an explosion of vibrant colors of red, yellow and orange. The leaves begin to drop off the trees, providing endless hours of leaf jumping fun for kids(and kids at heart) this also means the leaf raking season begins as well. However, there are some areas that don’t get to experience the magnificent beauty of these changing colors or at best a small show. Why, you may ask? Well, there are a few different reasons among them are temperature, precipitation, soil moisture and also, the species of the trees in the area-notable species are maple, aspen, oak and gum-they seem to produce a lovely performance of these wonderful colors annually in North America. However, the main agent is light or actually lack of it. The amount of daylight relates to the timing of the autumnal equinox . As the autumn days grow shorter, the reduced light triggers chemical changes in deciduous plants causing a corky wall to form between the twig and the leaf stalk.
